Veronica was born in Italy and lived in the first century. She was the wife of a Roman officer, and is renowned for having wiped Christ’s brow as he carried his cross to Calvary. In a photosensitive phenomenon a “vera icon,” (true image) of Jesus miraculously appeared on the cloth, and rendered it with magical healing powers. Veronica took her treasure to Rome and healed the ailing Emperor, then gave it to Pope St. Clement. Sometimes called the “vernicle,” the scarf now resides in St. Peter's Basilica where, on occasion, it glows with an otherworldly light and the imprint of Jesus blushes. A “St. Veronica,” in bullfighting, is a taunting gesture of brushing the bull's face with the matador’s cape. Veronica is also the patron of laundresses. Her feast day is July 15.
