Urban
was born in France in the fourth century. He became the Bishop
of Langres, near the wine producing regions of Cote-d’Or
and Champagne. Fleeing from murderous pagans he escaped his
persecutors by taking refuge in a local vineyard. Because of
his conversion of the winemakers who housed him in exile, and
his devotion to the blood of Christ, Urban has been adopted
as the patron of the wine producers of Burgundy. He is still
a popular saint in this northern region of France where he is
annually invoked to protect the grape-growers crops from a harsh
winter. Urban is also the patron of barrel makers, gardeners,
and vintners and he's invoked against blight, fainting, frost,
storms and alcoholism; His feast day is April 2. |
