Mary was born in Jerusalem in the first century B.C. She was the daughter of St. Joachim and St. Anne and it is a hotly debated point as to whether Mary had been miraculously conceived herself. As a young girl Mary took a vow of chastity and so it was to everyone’s surprise when it was announced by the angel Gabriel that the young virgin was with child. And more surprising still was that this was an immaculate conception of the Son of God. She quickly married Joseph, who was a carpenter, and moved to his home town of Nazareth. When King Herod ordered the killing of first-born sons the young couple moved to Egypt to protect their baby, Jesus, and remained there until the cruel King’s death. It wasn’t until they returned to Nazareth that Jesus started to exhibit his supernatural powers. Mary was in attendance at the wedding where Jesus, according to legend, performed his first miracle of turning water into wine. She was also present when her son was nailed to the cross as well as witnessing his ascension into heaven. The remainder of Mary’s life, and the facts of her death, remain under speculation. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, who, in a radio broadcast in 1946 dubbed her the Queen of the human race, officially declared Mary’s assumption into heaven as Catholic dogma. She’s also the patron of motherhood and the human race. The feast day of her assumption is August 15.
