Philemon
was born in Egypt in the third century. He was an actor, musician
and dancer cast to play the part of a local deacon named Apollonius
in a pagan sacrificial rite. During the performance Philemon
announced that he was not a pagan, that he too loved Christ
and he was baptized on the spot. Thugs of the cruel Emperor
Diocletian were rounding up and persecuting Christians and Philemon
was arrested with Apollonius and brought to Alexandria. Sentenced
to death, his hands and feet were bound with chains and he was
tossed into the sea. Philemon is also the patron of converts.
His feast day is March 8. |
