Pelagia
was born in Antioch in the third century. She was an exotic
dancer known to her audiences as Pearl. Legend has it that one
day Bishop Nonnus of Edessa witnessed Pearl’s strip-tease
and was so impressed that, using her as an example in his next
sermon, he urged his congregation to be as devoted to their
souls as Pearl was to her dance and beauty. Coincidentally,
Pelagia was present when this sermon was given and she was so
moved that she gave up her profession, confessed her sins to
the Bishop and was baptized. She then moved to Jerusalem, shaved
her head, dressed in male drag and became known as “Pelagius,
the beardless monk.” Pelagia’s feast day is October
