Michael
is the first of the seven Archangels and one of only three mentioned
in the Bible. He is considered to be God’s right-hand-man
in battling Beelzebub and is renowned for hurling the Devil
down to his fiery Hell saying, “I am Michael...who is
like God.” This Archangel is also the “Weigher of
Souls,” in charge of deciding who belongs to the “chosen
race.” He is a prominent figure in Judaism and in Islam,
where he is described in the Koran as having “wings the
color of emerald green...covered with saffron hairs, each of
them containing a million faces.” Pope Leo XIII in the
nineteenth century “witnessed” Michael in Hell battling
the Devil, and wrote a prayer that is currently used to end
Mass. It is believed that Michael can rescue people from Hell,
and has the power to pull strings on Judgment Day when he will
come face to face with Satan, in the final blowout with the
Dark One. Michael is also the patron of Germany, Brussels, Papua
New Guinea, the Basques, mariners, mountain tops, high places,
bankers, radiologists, grocers, supermarkets (because he’s
usually depicted in art holding a scale), cemeteries, the sick
and dying; and he’s invoked against peril at sea. His
feast day is September 29. |
