Matthew,
also known as Levi, was born in Galilee and lived in the first
century. He was a Jewish extortionist and was hated by both
Jews and Gentiles. Jesus came to him one day and said “follow
me,” but Matthew chastised the Saviour for associating
with people of such “ill repute” as himself. Nonetheless,
follow he did, and he became an Apostle credited with having
written the first Gospel. Using his wealth of knowledge of Jewish
custom, Matthew's writing was specifically intended for Jewish
Christians to help ease their conversion. According to legend
he was forced by eunuchs to fight a dragon, but the beast miraculously
dozed at his feet when he made the Sign of the Cross. Matthew,
whose name means “Yahweh," spent the remainder of
his life preaching and was martyrized for his faith in Persia.
Matthew is also the patron of accountants, bookkeepers, customs
officials stockbrokers, tax collectors and security guards.
His feast day is September 21. |
