Mary
was born in Bethany and lived in the first century. The sister
of Martha and Lazarus, she was often chastised for her lack
of domestic inclination. But Jesus, a frequent guest, came to
Mary's defense and told Martha, who was always busying herself
around the house, that, “Mary hath chosen the best part”
by sitting at His feet and listening to Him talk. Mary washed
the Saviour's feet with her tears, then dried them with her
hair before anointing them with perfumed oil. The night before
His crucifixion, Jesus dined with Mary and her family and was
given another foot rub. Judas criticized this indulgence and
nagged Mary about the money she could have raised for the poor
by selling the oil instead of wasting it on a condemned man.
Again the Redeemer defended her, saying that poor people were
a dime a dozen but that he was One-of-a-Kind. Mary was with
Christ when he died and was said to be the first person he appeared
to after his resurrection. She spent the remaining thirty years
of her life in a remote cave, catered to by angels. Mary is
also the patron sinners, contemplatives, glovers and female
hairstylists. Her feast day is July 22. |
