Martha,
the sister of Mary Magdalene and Lazarus, was born in Bethany,
just outside Jerusalem. She was renowned for being a fastidious
housekeeper and good hostess when Christ came to visit. She
would often get cranky with her sister Mary for not doing enough
housework. Christ gently chastised her saying, “Martha,
Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things but
... Mary hath chosen the best part.” Martha has also been
described as having the “courage of a man and the heart
of a woman” for having killed a dragon with holy water
and binding it with her girdle. Martha is also the patron of
dietitians, servants, innkeepers and sisters. Her feast day
is July 29. |
