Luke,
a Greek-speaking doctor born in Syria, lived in the first century
and is the author of the third Gospel. Luke was St. Paul’s
personal physician and faithful companion as they traveled together
doing missionary work. He's consistently referred to as a confirmed
bachelor. St. Paul in his dying days wrote, “0nly Luke
is with me.” The good doctor was crucified when he was
85 alongside St. Andrew. He'd done a painting of the Madonna
and Child that some believe now resides in Cypress, which explains
his association with artists. His Evangelical symbol, the winged
oxen, represents the sacrificial aspects in the opening of his
Gospel, and explains his association with butchers. Luke is
also the patron of brewers, glassworkers, painters, sculptors,
goldsmiths, lace makers, notaries and surgeons. His feast day
is October 18. |
