Julian
was born in Egypt in the second century. According to legend,
a deer that Julian was hunting warned him that one day he would
kill his own parents. He was so disturbed by this prophecy that
he moved far away from his family. He married a wealthy widow
and lived a comfortable life until one day, unbeknownst to him,
his parents had tracked him down and came for a surprise visit.
Julian wasn’t home at the time and his hospitable wife
allowed her in-laws to rest in the master bedroom while she
went to Church. When Julian returned home and saw a couple in
his bed he flew into a jealous rage and unwittingly murdered
his mother and father. Deeply distraught, he and his wife left
their previously happy home and traveled to Rome to be absolved
and then set up a hospice for the poor. Because of his reputation
for hospitality he has been adopted by traveling entertainers
as their patron. Julian is also the patron of boatmen, childless people,
circus performers, ferrymen, fiddlers, hospitality, innkeepers,
jugglers, knights, murderers, pilgrims, shepherds, travellers
and wandering musicians. His feast day is February 12. |
