“Judas,
brother of James” (Luke 6:16) and “Judas, brother
of Jesus” (Mark 6:3) is not Judas the betrayer of Jesus,
for whom he was often mistaken. Jude, one of the twelve Disciples,
is also known as Thaddeus and Lebbeus. He asked Jesus after
the Last Supper why he didn't expose himself to the rest of
the world. Jesus replied that He would come to all who love
Him. Jude preached in Syria and Mesopotamia with St. Simon,
warning of “certain men secretly entered in ... ungodly
men”. They went to Persia and were clubbed to death. Because
of the unfortunate coincidence that his name is so similar to
such an infamous “bad guy,” only the desperate would
pray to him, thus his association with hopeless causes. Incidentally,
Jude is regularly mentioned, with gratitude, in personal columns
and is one of the most popular saints in America. His feast
day is October 28. |
