Joseph
was the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster father to Jesus.
Although a poor carpenter, he was a descendant of King David
and considered a just man. “The Divine Cuckold,”
as he was sometimes called, was deeply disturbed by the news
that his virginal fiancee was with Child, but an angel came
and comforted him. Joseph took his family to Egypt to escape
Herod's slaughter of newborns, and eventually the Holy First
Family settled in Galilee. Although the “Son of God,”
Jesus called himself the “son of man” in Joseph's
honor, and he learned his earthly father’s trade. Joseph
was responsible for most of the Saviors education, and was filled
with joy upon seeing his twelve year old son preaching in the
temple. Joseph was said to have had a peaceful death, with Mary
(who would only leave him occasionally to tend to her Divine
Son) at his side. Joseph is also the patron of Austria, Canada,
Mexico, Peru, Vietnam, carpenters, bursars, social justice,
the Church and happy death; and he's invoked against communism
and doubt. His feast day is March 19. |
