Job
is a much-written-about figure from the Old Testament. He was
a very wealthy and pious man. God told Satan to look on him
as
an example of someone who was
“blameless and upright”. Satan replied that Job's
goodness was a result of his considerable blessings, and that
if he wasn't so privileged perhaps he wouldn't be so godly.
So the Lord agreed to let Satan destroy Job's possessions, including
all of his livestock and seven children, But Job didn't curse
the Lord. So God gave the Devil one more shot and allowed him
to give poor Job sores all over his body. “I loathe my
life!” cried the embittered man to his mocking friends.
But God rewarded Job for maintaining his sense of “righteousness”
in the face of calamity, and made him even richer than before.
