Ivo
was born in France in the thirteenth century. He was the son
of a wealthy landowner and studied law, philosophy and theology
in Paris. He became a lawyer who practised in both civil and
ecclesiastical courts. He was known to have defended the poor
free of charge and fed them with produce from his land. Appointed
a judge before he was thirty, he was considered unbribeable
and incorruptible. He was particularly concerned with the needs
of orphans and funded the building of hospitals. This extraordinarily
admirable saint was celebrated in an old French nursery rhyme,
“Saint Yves was a lawyer, and a Breton as well. But not
a liar, strange to tell.” Ivo is also the patron of abandoned people,
judges, jurors, notaries and orphans. His feast day is May 19. |
