Homobonus
was born in Italy in the twelfth century. During his lifetime
he truly lived up to his name, which literally means “good
man.” He inherited his family's tailoring business and
became a very wealthy man. Still he went to Mass twice a day,
ran his business honestly, and donated the larger portion of
his profits to charity. One day, while attending church, he
held his arms out to form the shape of a cross and suddenly
fell over dead, which went unnoticed until after Mass. Because
of his community's urgency to have him canonized, he was miraculously
made a saint in only two years, which is extremely rare. The
fact that this was a happily married man, not of royal birth,
who hadn’t founded any religious orders, nor was even
ordained, and who was a non-martyr, make this one very exceptional
saint indeed! He was canonized simply because he did “ordinary
things extraordinarily well.” Homobonus is also the patron
of garment workers and tailors. His feast day is November 13. |
