Gomer,
also known as Gummarus, was born in Belgium in the eighth century.
He was of royal descent and a marriage was arranged for him
with a wealthy heiress named Guinmarie. Unfortunately for him,
his wife turned out to be extravagant, cruel and perverse and,
try as he might, he was not able to tame this shrew. He became
a soldier and went to Rome where he fought for King Pepin the
Short’s court for eight years. When he returned home he
found his household to be in complete chaos due to his wife’s
incompetence. He put things back in order, compensating his
workers who had not been paid during his absence, but failed
to convert his wife from her evil ways. Despite being childless
the ill-matched couple seperated and Gomer spent the remainder
of his life as a solitary hermit. Gomer is also the patron of
woodcutters and the childless and is invoked against hernia;
His feast day is October 11. |
