Godelieve
was born in Flanders in the eleventh century. She was of royal
birth and married a Flemish nobleman named Bertulf. Her new
husband, having second thoughts, abandoned her on their wedding
day and her mother-in-law proceeded to lock her in a cell. She
was fed bread previously chewed on by dogs and subjected to
a barrage of verbal and mental abuse. Bertulf returned, feigned
repetence and she was released, only to be strangled and drowned
by her hubby’s hired assasins. After returning from war
Bertulf truely did repent and entered a monastery. People with
sore throats go to the spot where our saint was brutally murdered
for a cure. Godelieve is also the patron of difficult marriages;
and she's invoked against in-law problems and throat diseases.
Her feast day is July 6. |
