George was born in Palestine in the fourth century. Legend has it that the beautiful daughter of a king was chosen by town lottery to be sacrificed to a dragon. The princess courageously faced the beast, when suddenly George charged in on his mighty white stallion. He tied up the dragon and paraded the monstrosity through town. The terrified townspeople agreed to George's condition that they all convert to Christianity, and he slew the dragon. Fifteen thousand people converted and the king offered the strapping young knight his most precious treasures in gratitude. George distributed his booty to the poor and left for Rome, where Christians were being ravaged by the evil emperor Diocletion. The heroic knight was eventually beheaded. “Riding St. George” was a medieval method of heterosexual intercourse, placing the woman in the dominant position, which was believed to be a way for a Bishop to be begot. George is also the patron of Catalonia, England, Genoa, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Venice, knights, soldiers, archers, armorers, cavalry, horses, equestrians, saddlers, farmers, butchers and husbands; and he's invoked skin diseases and V.D. His feast day is April 23.
