Gabriel
is one of God's Seven Archangels (one of three mentioned in
the Bible) and is a Holy Host of Heaven. In Islam, he is called
Gibrail and credited with having dictated the Koran. In the
west, he is the winged centerpiece of what is probably the most
painted scene in the Bible, the Annunciation. Aside from coining
the phrase, “Hail, Mary,” he also came to Zachary
(the husband of the Virgin's cousin Elizabeth) bringing news
that an infant named John the Baptist was growing inside his
aged (and supposedly barren) wife's womb. Before that, Gabriel
came to the prophet Daniel to explain the coming of the Messiah.
He's also believed to be the Angel who gave Adam and Eve the
boot from Eden. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV officially made Gabriel’s
Day the day before the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed
Virgin. In 1951, Pope Pius XII declared him the official Patron
of the Telecommunications industry. Gabriel is also the patron
of stamp collectors, postal, telephone, television and radio
workers, broadcasters, clerics, diplomats, messengers and childbirth.
His feast day is March 24. |
