Dorothy
was born in Cappodocia in the fourth century. She was a renowned
beauty, yet when an important dignitary asked for her hand in
marriage she politely declined. He sent his two sisters to try
to reason with her, but Dorothy introduced them to her true
love, Jesus, and instead they, too, were converted. Outraged,
her rejected suitor outed her to the authorities as a Christian,
and she was imprisoned. An angel appeared in her cell to nurture
her, and the next day she was dropped into a cauldron of boiling
oil, which was miraculously turned into a soothing lotion. Then
they stretched her on an iron rack and tried to roast her alive.
She only smiled, as if she were tanning. Finally, she was sentenced
to be beheaded. On her way to the execution block, some impudent
lawyer mockingly called out, “Send me some fruit and flowers
from your heavenly garden!" Soon after her death, an angel,
disguised as a child, knocked on the rude lawyer's door and
gave him a basket full of apples and roses. The angel/child
told him that they were from Dorothy, who was waiting for him
in her garden. He reticently bit into an apple and was instantly
converted, consequentially killed, cut into pieces and fed to
the birds; then found himself in the loving arms of his bride.
Dorothy is also the patron of florists and gardeners; and she’s
invoked against fire, lightning and thieves. Her feast day is
February 6. |
