Denis
was born in Italy in the third century. He was sent as a missionary
to France and became the first Bishop of Paris. He was imprisoned
and tortured by Parisian pagans and eventually beheaded in the
red light district Montmartre (mountain of martyrs). According
to legend, the decapitated saint walked for several miles to
the spot where currently stands the cathedral of St. Denis carrying
his head in his hands. After his death his body was thrown into
the Seine but was recovered and given a Christian burial by
his converts. “Montjoie St. Denis!” (“Follow
St. Denis!”) had long been the chant of French soldiers
as they headed into battle. Denis is also the patron of France
and Paris and is invoked against frenzy; His feast day is October
