Christina was born in Belgium in the third century. She was somewhat of a wild child, smashing her parent's idols on the floor and stealing money from them to give to the poor. She died young but, at her own funeral, the garlicky breath of the congregation snapped her back to life and, legend has it, she flew from her coffin up to the church rafters. She was very sensitive to smells, particularly the musk of men, and was often seen in isolated places: in an oven, on a weather vane, or perched on a tower. Some people thought she was very wise and sought out her advice, while others thought she was insane and “full of devils.” She escaped being chained to a pillar, despite a broken leg, and survived being thrown into a river with a millstone around her neck. Next, she was burned with torches and tortured with a knife and tongs. Finally, Christina was shot to death with three arrows. Her feast day is July 24.
