Blaise
was born in Armenia in the third century. He was a bishop from
a wealthy Christian family who was renowned for his healing
powers. He fled and hid in a cave to escape the popoular trend
of his day to persecute Christians. Legend has it that sick
animals would travel on thier own to his cave to be cured but
were careful not to interrupt his prayers. Hunters seaching
for wild game discovered a heard of sick animals outside of
Blaise’s cave and he was arrested. While in prison he
healed fellow prisoners and once saved a boy from choking to
death on a fish bone. (To this day throats are blessed on his
feast day). Blaise was sentenced to death and thrown into a
lake but he stood on the water and invited his persecutors to
join him. They tried and drowned. He was then beaten, had his
flesh torn with wool combs and then decapitated. Blaise is also
the patron of animals, construction workers and stonecutters;
and he’s invoked against coughs, goitres, throat diseases
and wild beasts. His feast day is February 3. |
