Bibiana,
born Viviana, lived in Italy in the fourth century. Along with
her mother and sister, she courageously rebelled against the
dictates of the status quo and maintained her faith in Jesus
during pagan times. The three women were all tied to a column
and flogged to death for their faith, then buried together in
the same tomb by a Holy man. An herb that grew above their grave
was said to have had a positive effect on epileptics and headache
sufferers, and reportedly worked miracles on hangovers. In Spain
the V in Viviana, which means “full of life” was
pronounced B, as in Bibiana, which means “full of drink,”
and the name stuck. Bibiana is also the patron of working women
and she's invoked against epilepsy and headaches. Her feast
day is December 2. |
