Bernard
was born in France in the tenth century. He became a priest
and traveled throughout the Alps proselytizing for over forty
years. He helped to establish a police force to protect innocent
victims from mountain robbers but he is most renowned for building
two hospices, that still bear his name, serving travel-weary
climbers and pilgrims en route to Rome. A popular breed of dog,
specifically trained to search for lost mountaineers, is named
after him. Bernard is also the patron of mountain climbers.
His feast day is May 28. |
