Bartholomew
was born in Cana in the first century B.C. He is one of the
twelve original disciples and is known in the book of John as
Nathanael. He was a good friend of St. Philip, the third apostle,
who introduced him to Jesus. He had also written a book of gospels,
referred to in writings of the time, but it had been lost. He
traveled to Ethiopia, India, and Turkey to preach as well as
Armenia, where he was skinned alive and then beheaded. He is
usually depicted in art with his skin over his arm holding a
tool for flaying which looks like a cheese-cutter, thus his
association with cheese merchants. Bartholomew is also the patron
of Armenia, bookbinders, butchers, leather workers, plasterers
and shoemakers; and he's invoked against neurological disorders
and twitching. His feast day is August 24. |
