Amand
was born in France in the sixth century. When he was twenty
he escaped his family and fled to a small island monastery.
His father found him and tried to force him out of a religious
life, threatening disinheritence. But Amand rebuked his father
and sided with Christ over the family fortune. He went to Tours
and was ordained and was eventually made Bishop. He became a
zealous missionary and proselytized throughout France, Germany,
and Belgium. His efforts were met with mixed response and he
was often beaten and thrown into rivers. He prevailed, however,
and lived to the ripe old age of ninety-five having established
several convents and monasteries in Belgium. Because of his
preaching in wine and beer producing regions he has been adopted
as the patron of alcohol-related occupations. Amand is also
the patron of Boy Scouts, brewers, innkeepers, and wine-makers.
His feast day is February 6. |
