Alonso Rodriguez was born in Spain in the sixteenth century. He joined the priesthood as a young man and went to Paraguay and Brazil on missionary work. He helped to establish a mission in Brazil before he was hacked to death with a tomahawk at the age of 30. Alonso was canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II and is the first saint assocaited with the Americas. His feast day is November 17.
