Agnes was born in Rome in the late third century When she was 13, an older wealthy man demanded that she marry his son, but she said that she liked Jesus better. Outraged by her rejection he threw her, naked, on the town square, and her hair miraculously began to grow to conceal her. A man, upon seeing her young nude body, convulsed, went blind, and died. Thus, considered a witch, she was sentenced to burn. Legend has it that, although kissed by the flames, she didn't perish and ironically her executioners went up in smoke. She was eventually martyrized and later seen at her graveside holding a white lamb, which is her traditional symbol. On the eve of her feast day, unmarried girls are said to dream of their husbands-to-be, if they fast for twenty-four hours and eat an egg with salt before going to bed. Agnes is also the patron of girl scouts, virgins, gardeners, betrothed couples and bodily purity. Her feast day is January 21.
