Aelred
was born in Scotland in the twelfth century nd was a member
of the royal house of King David I. Although living in the lap
of luxury he complained of “unspeakable torments”
bearing the burden of his sins and he entered religious life
at the age of 24. Thirteen years later he was appointed the
Abbot of Rievaulx, a position he held until his death 20 years
later. Because of his writings, which affirm the love between
men, he has become the patron of many gay Christian organizations.
He wrote, “It is no small consolation in this life to
have someone who can unite with you in an intimate affection”
and reportedly, was given ice baths on occasion to tame his
desire for such. Aelred preached the message “to love
and to be loved” and is renowned for his Treatise on Friendship.
On the death of his “friend” Simon he wrote, “...how
pleasant it was for us to spend our life on earth together;
how great a joy it would have been for us to journey to heaven
in each other's company.” Although he was never officially
canonized his feast day is observed by the Cistercian Order
and in 1985 Aelred was adopted into the calendar of the American
Episcopal Church. Aelred’s feast day is January 12. |
