In 1993, while living in New Orleans, I saw some Byzantine paintings of saints that reminded me of my own painting style. I was selling my art on Royal Street in the French Quarter, directly behind St. Louis Cathedral, and thought that a series of saint paintings would be apropos considering that the New Orleans football team is called the Saints. Being non-religious, I knew very little about patron saints and did some research into a fascinating world I never knew existed. I had heard there was a patron saint for television, but I didn't believe it could possibly be true. When I read about St. Clare, and learned that she really was officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as the patroness of the tube, I was hooked. Since then, I have painted well over 2000 icons, including the patron saints for drug addicts, hangovers, astronauts and hairdressers, as well as many more. I've sold them on the streets of New Orleans, Provincetown, New York, and Los Angeles. I am currently looking for a publisher for "My Little Book of Saints" featuring the work found in this website. If by chance you are a publisher, or if you know of one, who might be interested in this project please email me. Future projects include "Oh, My Gods!" featuring portraits and bios of mythological characters, and "When Queens Were Kings," with portraits and bios of gay monarchs. I also invite you to visit my other website The Painted Word featuring art prints of painted quotes and images. Thanks for stopping by. Your comments are greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from you soon. Richard |
